Old Forge…Adirondack Base Camp

Nothing much new to report. Great snow and great conditions; Free Snowmobiling.

Of course, even thermometers are freezing up, so that’s a consideration. But everyone doing any winter recreation in the North Country is used to frost. Preparation is key, and anyone who has been riding, sliding, or trekking in the Adirondack snow more than once has their favorite clothing and equipment systems to maximize fun and minimize exposure. And after all, the colder the temps, the more often we take breaks and enjoy our indoor time warming up.

The big news is Governor Cuomo’s helpful push to get more snowmobilers sampling the great offerings in the North Country. Saturday and Sunday, March 7-8 New York State will waive the snowmobile registration requirement for out-of-state sleds which have current registrations and insurance in their home states or Canada. To support that program, the Town of Webb will waive the trail permit requirement for the weekend of March 7-8. As part of the same trail system, Inlet will also waive the trail permit requirement. We know that when people sample “Snowmobile Central” and all the community has to offer, they will recognize the grooming and customer service which has earned Old Forge the title “Snowmobile Capital of the East” and become regular visitors, friends and customers.

The snowmobile trails are in great condition, thanks to our professional grooming crews. Those guys always say we do best with good snow and freezing temps and hey… that’s exactly the current recipe. The maintenance crews have made the most of it, two shifts per day every day. Looks like we’re warming up this weekend, with a regular heat wave that will get us to the upper 20s.

In addition to the fantastic riding, many snowmobiling families are enjoying skiing and snowboarding time at McCauley Mountain. Sliding on snow is fun in any form, and those frigid temps make for great snowmaking on the slopes. Of course, the close proximity of the chalet with its giant fireplace, hot food and lounge is a big plus. McCauley has an amazing variety of slopes, glades and trails packed into a small package, and you’re never more than a few minutes from the warmth of the chalet.

Bad storms? Good storms here. Frigid temps? Cold enough to keep great conditions here. Bundle up, head out, and get in for breaks. Your Winter Base Camp is ready.
